Marion County, Florida
Marion County was established in 1844 from sections of Alachua, Orange, and Hillsborough Counties. Until the mid-1800s, Marion County included most of present-day Lake, Sumter, and Putnam Counties. In the latter half of the century, during the American Reconstruction Era, Levy County was created in Marion's western portion.
The county was named after General Francis Marion, an American Revolutionary War hero known as "Swamp Fox." Marion was a hero to many of the early settlers.
